I figured it out! I now know how I'm going to close up the back of the cowl. The bottom sample was my first idea: bind off up to the decrease, knit, bind off from the second decrease to the end. Fail.

Second idea: knit all the way to the second decrease and combine those two stitches. Turn and knit back to the other decrease and combine those two stitches. Turn and work back to the other decrease and combine. Turn and work.... I'm a genius!
